Canceled a Subscription but Still Charged? Get a Refund
You canceled the subscription. You may even have a confirmation email proving it. Then another payment appeared on your bank or credit-card statement.
The charge does not automatically prove that the company ignored your cancellation. It could be a pending authorization, a renewal processed before the cancellation took effect, a different subscription, another account, or a payment controlled by Apple, Google Play, PayPal or another billing provider.
But if you canceled correctly and the company billed you afterward, you have a specific problem that requires a specific response.
This guide shows you how to identify the charge, protect your evidence, stop future payments, request a refund and decide when to contact your bank.
If you missed the cancellation deadline entirely, use our separate guide for people who forgot to cancel a free trial.
The fast answer
If you canceled a subscription but were still charged, do these five things:
- Take screenshots of the charge and your cancellation confirmation.
- Check whether the transaction is pending or completed.
- Confirm that you canceled the correct subscription through the correct account.
- Identify whether the merchant, Apple, Google Play, PayPal, Microsoft or another provider processed the payment.
- Request a refund from that billing provider and contact your bank if the charge remains unresolved.
Do not delete the account, remove old emails or report the payment as fraud before identifying what happened.
A payment can be unwanted without being fraudulent. Giving the bank an inaccurate dispute reason can make the investigation harder.
Cancellation and refund are separate actions
Canceling a subscription normally stops a future renewal. It does not automatically reverse a completed charge.
Major billing platforms treat cancellation and refund requests as separate actions. Apple has one process for canceling a subscription and another for requesting a refund. Google Play also provides separate cancellation and refund routes.
This means you need to answer two questions:
- Is future billing stopped?
- Does the completed charge qualify for a refund?
Do not stop after submitting the refund request. Confirm that the subscription itself will not renew again.
Step one: Save everything before changing the account
Start by creating a simple record of what happened.
Save the following information:
- Subscription or service name
- Amount charged
- Currency
- Transaction date
- Full statement descriptor
- Pending or completed status
- Account email used for the subscription
- Cancellation date and time
- Expected renewal date
- Cancellation confirmation email
- Screenshot of the subscription status
- Receipt or invoice
- Previous messages sent to support
- Support case or reference number
Hide your full payment-card number, account balance, home address and unrelated transactions before sending screenshots to support.
Never send a password, security code or one-time login code.
Why the exact time matters
The date alone may not explain what happened.
A trial could end at a specific time rather than at the end of the calendar day. A company may also require cancellation before a stated cutoff.
Apple currently tells customers to cancel a free or discounted trial at least twenty-four hours before the trial ends. Other companies use their own cancellation deadlines and terms.
Compare the exact cancellation time with the exact renewal deadline whenever that information is available.
Step two: Check whether the charge is pending or completed
Open your banking application and select the transaction.
Look for a status such as:
- Pending
- Processing
- Authorization
- Completed
- Posted
- Settled
A pending transaction is not the same as a completed payment.
Apple states that customers cannot request a refund while an Apple charge is pending. The customer must wait until the charge is completed and a receipt becomes available.
Take a screenshot showing the status, amount, date and statement descriptor. Check it again after the status changes.
Do not repeatedly submit refund requests while the payment is still pending. First determine whether it becomes a completed charge.
Step three: Confirm the subscription is actually canceled
Do not rely only on remembering that you pressed a cancellation button.
Open the billing account and look for a clear status such as:
- Canceled
- Expires on
- Ends on
- Recurring billing off
- Will not renew
Save a screenshot showing the subscription name and final access date.
Also search your email for:
- Cancellation confirmed
- Subscription canceled
- Automatic renewal turned off
- Your plan will end
- Membership expires
- Trial canceled
A support message saying that a request was received is not always the same as a completed cancellation. Look for a final confirmation.
Canceling the app is not canceling the subscription
Deleting or uninstalling an application does not cancel the billing agreement.
Google explicitly states that uninstalling an app does not cancel its Google Play subscription. Apple requires customers to cancel Apple-billed subscriptions through their Apple Account subscription settings.
If you only deleted the application, the subscription can remain active.
Check the correct account
Many billing problems come from checking one account while the subscription belongs to another.
Review every email address or login method you have used with the service, including:
- Personal email
- Work email
- Apple Account
- Google Account
- Facebook login
- Microsoft account
- Old email address
- Family member’s account
Search each inbox for the service name, transaction amount, receipt number and words such as “subscription,” “renewal” and “invoice.”
Step four: Identify who processed the payment
The service you used and the company that processed the payment can be different.
For example, an application subscription could have been purchased through:
- The company’s website
- Apple’s App Store
- Google Play
- PayPal
- Microsoft
- Amazon
- Roku
- A mobile carrier
- A payment processor acting for the merchant
Check the receipt and bank-statement descriptor. The receipt normally shows which company handled the purchase.
Contacting the application developer will not cancel an Apple-controlled subscription. Apple will not decide a refund for a payment processed directly by an independent merchant.
Follow the money rather than the application icon.
If Apple processed the subscription
Open the subscription settings connected to your Apple Account.
On an iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription.
- Check its status and expiration date.
Apple states that if there is no cancellation button or the screen shows an expiration message in red, the subscription is already canceled.
If you cannot find the subscription, search your email for an Apple receipt. The receipt identifies the Apple Account used for the transaction. Check other Apple Accounts and Family Sharing purchases when relevant.
Requesting an Apple refund
For a completed eligible charge:
- Go to Apple’s Report a Problem service.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the purchase.
- Choose “Request a refund.”
- Select the reason that accurately describes what happened.
- Select the subscription or purchase.
- Submit the request.
- Save confirmation that the request was received.
Apple says to allow twenty-four to forty-eight hours for an update. Approval is not guaranteed, and the time required for approved funds to appear depends on the payment method.
If the charge is still pending, Apple says to wait until it completes before requesting the refund.

If Google Play processed the subscription
First confirm that you are using the Google Account that owns the subscription.
In Google Play:
- Open Google Play.
- Select your profile picture.
- Open Payments and subscriptions.
- Select Subscriptions.
- Find the relevant subscription.
- Confirm its cancellation or renewal status.
If it does not appear, switch to every Google Account used on the device.
Requesting a Google Play refund
Google’s current web process is:
- Open Google Play in a browser.
- Select your profile picture.
- Open Payments and subscriptions.
- Open Budget and order history.
- Find the order.
- Select Report a problem.
- Choose the option that accurately describes the issue.
- State that you want a refund.
- Submit the form.
Google says refund eligibility depends on the purchase, payment method, timing and location. It also says customers usually receive a decision within one day, although the decision can take up to four days.
For requests made more than forty-eight hours after an app purchase, Google directs customers to contact the application developer. The developer can process refunds under its policy and applicable law.
Do not submit multiple requests for the same Google Play transaction. Google states that duplicate requests do not accelerate the decision.
If PayPal processed the subscription
A PayPal automatic payment can remain active even when you stop using the merchant’s service.
To inspect it on PayPal’s website:
- Open Settings.
- Select Payments.
- Open Automatic Payments or Subscriptions and saved businesses.
- Select the merchant.
- Check the automatic-payment status.
- Cancel the automatic payment if it remains active.
- Save the confirmation screen.
Canceling the automatic payment addresses future PayPal billing. It does not automatically reverse a completed payment.
PayPal advises customers seeking the return of a completed payment to contact the seller first. The seller’s contact details can be found by opening the transaction in PayPal Activity.
If the seller does not resolve the problem, check whether the transaction is eligible for a dispute through PayPal’s Resolution Center. PayPal dispute deadlines depend on the transaction and issue, so check the deadline shown in your account.
If Microsoft processed the subscription
Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the purchase and open Services and subscriptions.
Microsoft’s current process is:
- Find the subscription.
- Select Manage.
- Select Cancel or Upgrade or Cancel.
- Follow the cancellation instructions.
- Review whether the cancellation process offers a refund.
Microsoft states that subscriptions purchased directly from Microsoft may qualify for refunds depending on the subscription, timing and country. Eligibility is shown during the cancellation process.
If the subscription was purchased through Apple or Google Play, Microsoft directs the customer to the relevant app store for cancellation and refund support.
If the merchant charged your card directly
Open the company’s official website by typing the address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Avoid refund links received through unexpected messages.
Sign in and check:
- Billing history
- Subscription status
- Renewal date
- Cancellation history
- Saved payment method
- Support messages
- Invoices and receipts
If the subscription is still active, cancel it through the official account page and save the final confirmation.
Then send the company a clear refund request containing the relevant dates and evidence.
Refund-request message you can copy
Subject: Refund request for charge after subscription cancellation
Hello,
I canceled my subscription to [service name] on [cancellation date and time]. My account showed that the subscription was canceled or would not renew.
A charge of [amount and currency] was then processed on [charge date]. The transaction or receipt number is [reference number].
I have attached the cancellation confirmation and the matching payment record. Please confirm that future billing is stopped and review the completed charge for a refund.
If the charge is not eligible for a refund, please provide the reason and the cancellation or billing record used to reach that decision.
Thank you.
Keep the message factual. Do not accuse the company of theft or fraud unless you have evidence establishing that.
Proof checklist before contacting support
Prepare a small evidence packet containing:
- Cancellation confirmation
- Cancellation date and time
- Renewal date
- Final subscription-status screen
- Receipt or invoice
- Completed transaction screenshot
- Full statement descriptor
- Account email
- Order or transaction number
- Previous support messages
- Support case number
- Short timeline of events
A simple timeline can look like this:
- Subscription started: [date]
- Renewal expected: [date and time]
- Cancellation submitted: [date and time]
- Cancellation confirmed: [date and time]
- Payment completed: [date]
- Refund requested: [date]
- Company response: [date]
Do not edit screenshots in a way that changes their meaning. Only cover unrelated private information.
Why a charge can appear after cancellation
Several different situations can produce a charge after you believe you canceled.
The renewal happened before the cancellation
Canceling after the renewal was processed can stop the next renewal without reversing the current one.
Check the invoice time, renewal time and cancellation time.
The cancellation was not completed
Some services use several confirmation screens. Closing the page before the final confirmation can leave the subscription active.
Check for a final confirmation email or an account status showing that renewal is off.
You canceled the wrong account
The payment can belong to another email address, Apple Account, Google Account or family member.
Use the receipt to identify the account that created the purchase.
You canceled the wrong subscription
Some companies offer several subscriptions under one account. Canceling one plan does not cancel another plan, add-on or channel.
Match the charged amount and receipt to the exact product.
Another provider controls the billing
A company’s application can show no active direct subscription while Apple, Google Play, PayPal, Amazon, Roku or a carrier still controls the payment.
Find the billing owner on the receipt.
The charge is pending
A pending authorization is not a completed refund-eligible payment on platforms such as Apple.
Monitor it until its final status is clear.
The plan has an annual commitment
Turning off renewal and ending an annual commitment are not always the same action.
Review the plan name, invoice, cancellation confirmation and official terms. Ask support to identify the exact contract term when it refuses a refund.
What to do if the refund is denied
A denied request is not the end of the investigation, but it also does not automatically mean the company acted incorrectly.
Take these steps:
- Save the rejection email or status screen.
- Ask for the exact reason for the denial.
- Compare that reason with your cancellation confirmation.
- Ask support to confirm the cancellation timestamp in its system.
- Request a written final response.
- Use the billing provider’s official review or appeal route when available.
- Contact your bank or card issuer if the evidence shows an unresolved billing error or payment taken after valid cancellation.
Do not repeatedly send the same message without addressing the reason given for the refusal.
When to contact your bank
Contact your bank promptly when:
- The merchant continues billing after confirmed cancellation.
- The billing provider cannot identify the charge.
- The company refuses to investigate a documented billing error.
- The transaction was genuinely unauthorized.
- The company has stopped responding and a dispute deadline is approaching.
Explain exactly what happened.
If you originally authorized the subscription but canceled before the disputed renewal, say that. Do not describe the card as stolen or the original subscription as unauthorized when that is untrue.
In the United States, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises consumers to notify their credit-card company about a disputed charge immediately and follow the issuer’s dispute instructions.
The US Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to preserve cancellation records and dispute a charge with the card issuer when a company charged without consent and will not provide a refund.
In the United Kingdom, the Financial Conduct Authority states that a consumer can cancel a recurring card payment by contacting the business or the card issuer. The FCA says the issuer must stop future payments after being instructed to do so.
Rules, deadlines and protections vary by country, card type, bank and payment method. Ask your financial institution for the procedure applying to your account.
Common mistakes that weaken a refund request
Deleting the application
Deleting an app does not cancel its subscription.
Deleting the account too early
Account deletion can remove access to receipts, billing history, subscription status and support messages.
Resolve the billing issue and save your evidence first.
Reporting a recognized payment as fraud
If you recognize the company but dispute the renewal, describe the real issue: a recurring payment after cancellation.
Contacting the wrong company
Send the request to the organization that processed the payment.
Sending several incomplete requests
One complete request containing the transaction, dates and proof is easier to investigate than several messages containing different information.
Waiting without checking deadlines
Refund, appeal and payment-dispute deadlines vary. Check the official policy and contact the appropriate provider promptly.
Sharing excessive financial information
Support normally does not need your full card number, password or banking login. Use the company’s official secure support channel and provide only the information requested.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a refund if I canceled my subscription but was still charged?
You can request one. Approval depends on the cancellation timing, billing provider, transaction, subscription terms, location and evidence. A cancellation confirmation created before the renewal is important evidence, but it does not guarantee approval.
Does canceling a subscription automatically refund the last charge?
No. Cancellation and refund requests are separate processes on platforms including Apple and Google Play.
Why does the subscription say canceled when I was still charged?
The status may confirm that the next renewal is stopped while a previous renewal has already been processed. Compare the charge time, renewal time and cancellation time.
What if I canceled the free trial before it ended?
Check the provider’s exact deadline. Apple currently tells customers to cancel a free or discounted trial at least twenty-four hours before it ends. Other providers use their own terms.
Save the screen showing when you canceled and when the trial was scheduled to renew.
What if the charge is pending?
Save a screenshot and monitor its status. Apple does not allow a refund request while its charge is pending. Other providers and banks use their own processing rules.
What if I cannot find the subscription?
Check every account, receipt and billing provider. The subscription could belong to another email address, Apple Account, Google Account, family member or direct merchant account.
What if I deleted the app before canceling?
Reinstalling the app is not always necessary. Open Apple, Google Play, PayPal or the merchant’s website and inspect the subscription through the billing account.
How long does a refund decision take?
Apple says to allow twenty-four to forty-eight hours for an update on a refund request. Google Play says a decision usually arrives within one day but can take up to four days. Approved funds can take additional time to reach the original payment method.
Other merchants and payment providers use their own timelines.
Should I contact the merchant or my bank first?
Start with the billing owner when you recognize the subscription and the situation is not fraud. Preserve the response. Contact your bank promptly if billing continues, the charge cannot be resolved or a dispute deadline is approaching.
Can I dispute an annual renewal?
You can ask the billing owner to review it and ask your bank about its dispute process. Eligibility depends on the cancellation timing, plan terms, local rules and evidence.
What if the company says it has no cancellation record?
Send your confirmation email, screenshot, support case or other timestamped proof. Ask the company to provide its subscription and cancellation history in writing.
Can I stop future payments without receiving a refund?
Yes. Stopping future renewal and recovering a completed payment are separate outcomes. Confirm both separately.
Final checklist
Before closing the case, confirm that:
- The correct subscription is canceled.
- The account shows a final access or expiration date.
- Future recurring billing is off.
- You identified the payment processor.
- You submitted the refund request through the correct route.
- You saved the request confirmation.
- You recorded the expected decision time.
- You kept the cancellation proof and final response.
- You contacted your bank when the charge remained unresolved.
A cancellation confirmation and a bank charge can tell conflicting stories. The safest response is to preserve both records, follow the billing route and keep every step factual.
